We Didn't Start The Fire

I've been trying to make sense of the rigmarole now foisted upon our lean, uncuttable, frontline services in light of this anecdotal piece from Matthew Norman in the Telegraph (do read the whole thing).

As far as I can understand it, the emergency services' procedure for responding to a small domestic fire is as illustrated by this crude flowchart.

Whereas one assumes it would be far better for all concerned if it was like this.

But then, that wouldn't really be as profitable for public sector risk assessors, meetings convenors, seminar holders and yes, flowchart production professionals, now would it?

"You cannot be serious" in the voice of John McEnroe.

And this is why when someone asks why you don't help the police (or any other public sector service) and avoid them as much as possible you say that it's not worth the trouble because your refusal to work with them will be assumed as being a subversive and therefore lead to arrest or court proceedings or child protection officers making your life hell.

It's become a them and us situation with bunker mentalties on both sides.

Absolutely. I have gone from being an erstwhile great supporter of the police (and I remain sure that there are probably still a few good ones amongst them) to one of those people who “don’t see nuffin’ and don’t know nuffin.’” It just isn’t worth the risk any more.

If it were not so serious, it would be amusing.

But it is serious, isn't it?

I read that report, but I have seen no follow up. I mean, did the DT contact the Fire Service chiefs and ask what had subsequently happened about this silliness? Clearly not.

And is this not a huge problem with the MSM? They pretend to be 'defenders of the people', but the fact is that they are simply selling newspapers for profit. Any old story will do, provided that it is sufficiently shocking.

It is inevitable that the MSM will decline. There really is no reason for printed copy any more. Some newspapers are trying to persuade people to pay for internet access to their newspapers. I will be amazed if it works.

One of the reasons that I refuse to have SKY in my house is that I totally refuse to accept their adverts without them paying me to accept them. If they want me to watch their adverts, then they must, at least, provide the other content free. Unfortunately, not many people seem to think in this way - fools!

If anti-smoking propaganda material can be introduced into schools, surely anti-commercial con tricks material can be introduced into schools.

Is it any wonder that THE PEOPLE are angry? Everyone is so confused.

I know it's a pisstake chart, but...

they should go if the fire has been put out, because it may re-ignite or hidden parts of the building may catch and continue to burn (and they can't reasonably take someones word for it over the phone).

Asking a bit much are you not?

Expecting media scum to actualy do what they are bloody PAID for?

And here is the problem, Dick, perfectly displayed in these comments.

For the 95% of people saying the Fire Brigade or the Police were not needed, there will always be one moron who needs his or her hand held by the state because they lack the mental ability or courage to think for themselves.

Hence the state must provide.

Then they are useless eaters. Let them die.

Could've been worse: imagine if a ciggie had caused the fire - subsequent compulsory fitting of smoke alarm and invite to the local smoking cessation clinic!

It would be interesting to read the comments if the culprit HAD been a ciggie - perhaps less of the 'isn't overbearing authoritarianism awful?' and more of the 'thank God the emergency services respond so quickly when there are irresponsible scum daring to risk damage to their neighbours'....
