Don't Forget The Smoking Ban, Nick

I'm sucking the marrow out of life, true enough. I made my first ever Facebook group last night.

I hope you'll join and invite all your friends? After all, why would regular readers here not want to, eh?

News of how and when we can nominate an amendment to be included in Clegg's 'revolutionary' bill will be sent to all members when (if?) details are announced.

You can join the group HERE.

Feel free to add relevant photos, links, videos, discussions and anything else if it floats your boat, too.

And did I mention ... invite all your friends?

I joined. But I'm not in the least bit optimistic about it.

My Pub landlord says he hopes they repeal it. He says he will still not have smoking in the pub, but it will be his choice. And if, now and again, we all decide to get pissed and have a locking, we can get the ashtrays out.

Good thoughts.

It's in the Great Repeal Bill discussion page, Frank. Link here.

Therefore, at the moment it is still 'in'. The more publicity the better for making sure it stays there.

Once the coalition's petition legislation is in place, we get the smoking ban re-debated in Parliament:

We will ensure that any petition that secures 100,000 signatures will be eligible for formal debate in Parliament. The petition with the most signatures will enable members of the public to table a bill eligible to be voted on in Parliament.

Shouldn't be difficult to get a hundred thousand in the facebook group. The "smoking should be allowed in pubs" group got a million before facebook removed it (anyone get an explanation off facebook?). Anticipate anti-tobacco starting an opposition page and fighting a numbers war. Also will attempt to take over the wiki discussion page you linked to. Need to get over the point that numbers are irrelevant to the question of whether smokers should be permitted to smoke on private property.

Anon: Good point about the previous FB group (that was pulled) but it didn't reach a million. I know it was over 250,000 though, maybe 330k+ ???

And, as you say, just because more (and it wasn't that many more) joined the opposing group matters not a fig. We live in a democracy not an ochlocracy (mob rule).

I added a comment to the Great Repeal Bill discussion page. The comments all seem to be jumbled together. And it looks as if anyone (e.g. an antismoker) could go and edit/delete mine. Which is the sort of thing they would do.

Uncle Marvo's landlord says he
would keep the total ban, eh.
Did he have one before July 07
or is he just another yellow
livered windbag . What a total
arsehole, one of 50 odd thousand.
Probably a stick insect tavern or
Baguette Depot.
Print his address ,we can send him a jiffy bag full of white feathers.

The Cameroid and the Cleggster said they are going to raise prices of 'cheap' tipples.

Who fucking asked for a price rise? I didn't. Do the fake charities have a large hand in this?

@ Paul.

Indeed. And the reason for this, I heard today, was that "more people are drinking at home."

EL-E-PHANT! ROOM!

They just WILL NOT discuss this issue, will they? And judging from the comments on the Telegraph, Guardian and Redwood's site it's the number one issue in ghetting the State off our backs.

Then again, I remember arguing with Tom Harris about Civil Liberties during "The Dark Days" and he said, "I don't know why people keep banging on about Civil Liberties. I barely got a letter about it until 3 years ago."

I just replied, "And what happened 3 years ago, Tom? Anything that might have triggered that? A Ban, maybe?"

He didn't reply.

To coin a phrase, they just don't get it, do they?

Re: the Wiki discussion page. I don't see the point of this. I admit I haven't bothered to investigate who set it up. As Frank says, anyone can change a wp page and these things become a sprawling mess of incoherence and repetition. In my humble, the best strategy might be for one succinct article, getting over a very few simple points, to be written, under a headline like "The views of the Ban Amendment Coalition", and maintained against vandalism.I suggest Chris Snowdon might be the best person to write it. The title of this Group could be the signatory.
