Interesting article. That's the kind of history lesson I like.
They hanged him, flayed his skin, then displayed it on the door as warning to others not to steal from the king. Sounds a bit like the smoking ban with people on display outside the door up front for all to see as warning that liberty will not be tolerated and smokers will be punished for their crime.
