A New Year Prohibitionist Nightmare

This evening, starting from around 8:20pm, the first world sports title of 2014 will be contested, the odds-on favourite being a 24 year old from Holland named Michael van Gerwen. In Holland, of course, you can still smoke in a pub while, just yesterday, their version of ASH was 'terminated'.

And tonight, MvG's sponsors will be hoping his tungsten tossing exploits result in increased sales of their fine consumer products.

The tobacco control industry must bloody hate those liberal-minded Dutch, eh?

I have, and have had, a lot of Dutch friends. Indeed, my youngest daughter is in a long-term relationship with a Dutchman. I've always liked the Dutch, not least because of their national trait of laid-back pragmatism, as is evidenced in their application of the anti-tobacco edicts. Long may they continue to resist the blandishments of Those Who Would Control Us.

Austrians too can continue to smoke in their 'locals'; the law requires that places over a certain size must have a closed room for non-smokers and this has worked fine without problems until a few months ago. The 'Health' lobby then fought hard for a change in the law to compel these places to make a 'smoke free' route to the WCs. The industry went Ape; they'd just spent a fortune making the changes to achieve smoke-free areas. Wisely, the politicians have backed down for now ... but no-one believes the spite lobby won't be back.

Ah... I think I see what's going on.

Since the thieving incompetent administrators infesting the NHS are feeling a bit of heat - they're disappearing down the rat-hole of local government = "public health" and it's associated budget are being transferred (pea under cup style) away from NHS to the local council...(which in Wiltshire they're talking about partially merging with plod!!!)

Then they take the word "government" as in local government to mean that they are now in charge and everybody has to do what the government says - 'coz we're in charge

Just a wild guess .... I think this isn't going to turn out well at all.

Did you know that today in Zambia, if you tried to stop someone smoking in a pub, or as they are called there, a tarven you would be smacked in the face, hard and often?
