Going To Great Lengths

Christ! Is this still rumbling on?

Olympic swimming champion Rebecca Adlington has demanded an explanation from the BBC for failing to take tougher action over 'outrageous' slurs made by comedian Frankie Boyle.

Adlington, a two-time gold medal winner at last year's Beijing Olympics, was 'humiliated' by the 37 year old's comments during an episode of BBC 2's satirical show Mock the Week.

The Glaswegian comic told the audience that Adlington resembled 'someone who's looking at themselves in the back of a spoon'.

Adlington has now written to the BBC and insisted that its rebuke is no more than 'a slap on the wrist' for a comedian whose comment fell 'well below the standards of common decency'.

Because much more respect should be shown to someone who won two swimming gold medals despite not possessing a spine.

Last night, Adlington's manager Rob Woodhouse said: 'Essentially, he was given a slap on the wrist and there are no real implications for him. For a comedian or any sort of performer, the media is their promotional vehicle. If the BBC chose to remove the oxygen of publicity and stopped him from appearing in their shows, then maybe that could act as a deterrent.'

Perhaps not whinging about it might have the same oxygen-restrictive effect. Just a thought.

Better still. Instead of reaching for the hankies, how about responding with, "My arse, your face, Boyle".

Good grief.

How many more people have heard this joke since they made such a fuss of it?

I look forward to Gordon Brown complaining about Frankie Boyle saying he looked like a sad face painted onto a scrotum.

Humour is banned - didn't you get the memo?

His joke was spot on - she is a great swimmer, but not a very pretty girl.

Rebecca, just live with the fact that you are slightly odd looking. Those annoying British Gas adverts don't help you either...

DP, you are quite right, of course. I think that RA is a lovely girl and her own particular looks only add to her 'attractiveness'.
How would we go if all caricatures of politicians etc were banned because the individual found the caricatures offencive?
It is the MSM exaggerating things again, isn't it?

Let's not give them the oxygen.

Wot Gigets said, bringing this up again merely prolongs the humiliation.

Memo to Rebecca Adlington , grow up girl.

I'd obviously missed this tempest in a teacup, since the first I knew of it was her whine in the media yesterday.

On the upside it looks like having a thin skin makes you able to swim faster.

my favourite bit was her saying that she had not "courted publicity or celebrity status, making the personal remarks unjustified".

Her website and PR team suggest otherwise

I think she has a face like a bulldog licking piss off a thistle....

I still would though!

Sounds to me like she's winding up to a compensation claim.
