Many things sadden my political emotions but few get to such human emotions as I have.

One that did was the news imparted to me recently by the lady who runs my local Chinese take-away. For a couple of years a Brazilian chap whizzed around Highbury and Hackney delivering their fine meals to telephonic customers. I met him a couple of times while having a ciggy outside the shop and waiting for my nosh to be wokked.

A few weeks ago he went back to Brazil to see his mother. Not, sadly, to see his father and only brother, both of whom were killed in their thirties - innocent victims decades apart of the gang culture that is rife in Rio and Sao Paulo. He said he was scared to go back because he was 39 and feared he too would not make the age of forty.

True enough, one evening while walking home he was set upon by a gang, robbed and stabbed to death.

It is not surprising we are inundated with Brazilians desperate to earn a peaceful living.

His name was Max. All he wanted was to live a life without fear and earn a modest, honest living.

City Of God, yes a great film.
What chance of Londons Finest showing the Favelistas how it's done, bring mayhem and murder to guests at the Olympics ?

Sad story FB, Hackney and Highbury are not exactly tranquil but seems your deliveryman went home to even worse.

Very sad story, TFB.

It will be very interesting to see how Rio's sprawl of slums and vicious gang culture is airbrushed out of the fluffy coverage we will be fed in the lead up to 2016.
